I love what I do every day – empowering people through song and word.
A new client who is in the process of becoming a better speaker has a few challenges. First of all English is not her first language. And buried in her accent is a lisp, which makes her even more difficult to understand.
A lisp is a speech impediment that causes S and Z to be pronounced as an unvoiced TH such as in the word “think”. The word “sound” becomes “thound”. A lisp causes the speaker embarrassment and added stress. The reasons someone develops a lisp are not clear. The impact of having a lisp has been clearly documented.
My client is a woman in her late 30’s who has had this lisp all her life. She assures me that it has always caused her stress and embarrassment. So the first thing I did with her was to tackle reversing her lisp.
Within 15 minutes she was – using my instruction – speaking clearly and almost lisp free! Can you imagine after a lifetime of lisping?
This lovely woman will have to be mindful of her speech and listen for the lisp so she can continue the process of correction. Her current muscle memory for pronouncing S and Z needs to be changed with practice. Over time the old lisp muscle memory will be replaced with clear S and Z sounds.
Do you suffer with a lisp? You can speak clearly with the proper help!
Here are a few simple steps to begin creating a new muscle memory.
- Listen to people who have clear diction to discern the difference between the S, Z and unvoiced TH sounds.
- Pronounce unvoiced TH words clearly as you notice how your tongue behaves to produce the sound.
- Listen to a clear S and imitate noticing how your tongue behaves.
- [s] (unvoiced) and [z] (voiced) are produced by breath flowing between the tongue and the front teeth. Tongue is high in mouth except for the tip, which is behind the lower front teeth.
- Practice the correct tongue position for S and Z. Then switch to the unvoiced TH and feel the difference.
